AWord From Michael Reinert
on the Changing Face of the
Record Industry
The following is a speech first presented at the CMJ Convention in New York City by
Michael Reinert. Mr. Reinert is executive vice president of Business and Legal Affairs
for the Universal Motown Republic Group. His comments are regarding the current
state of artist agreements and relations in the record industry.
ood afternoon. I want to express my thanks to Ken Abdo, Scott Gold-
man, and Joyce Dollinger for inviting me here to speak with you
today. I see many familiar faces in the room and also many new ones,
and I'm grateful for this opportunity to share with you all some perspectives
on the current-and perhaps future-state of the recorded music industry. I
want to note for the record that my views and opinions expressed here today

The NFL v. Cable Television:
Which Heavyweight Will Be Left Standing?
BY JOSEPH M. HANNA
As the whole world now knows, the New York Giants upset the New England
/Patriots to win Super Bowl XLII, preventing the Patriots from becoming the
L irst team in more than 35 years to go through an entire season, including
playoffs, with an unblemished record. The game, of course, was a rematch of the
December 29,2007, regular season finale, in which the Patriots defeated the Giants to
become the first National Football League (NFL) team since the 1972 Miami Dol-
phins to finish the season undefeated. Approximately 34.5 million viewers watched
this historic game. According to the NFL and Nielsen Media Research, the viewing
audience was the largest audience for an NFL nonplayoff game in more than 12
years. However, leading up to the game, it appeared that most of those 34.5 mil-
lion fans would miss the Patriots' pursuit of a perfect season because of a standoff
between NFL Enterprises LLC and several major cable companies. The story behind

James L.
Perzik,
Lakers Lawyer
and Trojan
Extraordinaire
BY VERED N.YAKOVEE
L makes perfect sense that James Lee
Perzik would grow up to be the first
d only general counsel of the Los
Angeles Lakers, who would broker one
of the then-largest and most complex
sports deals on behalf of current owner
Jerry Buss. Perzik was a student at Los
Angeles High School well before the
Lakers were a sparkle in Minnesota's
eye, let alone that of Dr. Buss. Perzik
attended the University of Southern
California (USC) for both under-
graduate and law school. Regarding the
latter, he says, I didn't realize you were
supposed to apply anywhere else. His
ongoing commitment to the Lakers
organization, USC, and its law students
confirms his quote. He really wasn't
supposed to apply anywhere else. Los
Angeles awaited him.
As an undergrad, Perzik earned
degrees in commerce and account-
ing, and immediately thereafter
passed not one but two exams-his
CPA exam and an army physical that
