The Narrowing Role of Baseball's Commissioner

7ud Selig predicts changes will make it an
expanded and more defined role. Bowie
/Kuhn apparently thought, perhaps correct-
ly, that the former job description gave him unlimited
power to void trades and sales. Sen. Howard Metzen-
baum says the job has been so diluted that it's only
good for a lackey.
From the unprecedented, despotic reign of Kene-
saw Mountain Landis through the litigatory maze cre-

ated by Bowie Kuhn to the vacant days of today,
the role of the commissioner of baseball to act in the
sport's best interests has, indeed, been a hazy one.
Recently, baseball owners attempted to redefine
the commissioner's role. It is too early to tell if, when
the dust settles, the office itself will remain in the
best interests of baseball, never mind whether its
occupant will act in the best interests of the game.'
