With this issue I begin my term as the new Editor-in-Chief of Critical Criminology:
An International Journal. As the official journal of the Division of Critical Crimi-
nology, the mandate of Critical Criminology is to provide a forum in which scholars
can engage questions of social, political and economic justice. The journal is aimed
at researchers and academics working in a range of critical criminological traditions,
and, by ensuring that it does not limit its scope to official definitions of crime, it
encourages debate and analysis of social harms and justice, broadly defined.
Since its launch 15 years ago, Critical Criminology has enjoyed a reputation as a
respected channel for manuscripts presenting alternative analyses of some of the
most pressing social justice issues of our time. The quality, quantity and diversity of
articles being submitted to the journal are a testament to the relevance of the field of
critical criminology, and the vibrancy it now enjoys. Many hardworking, first-class
people have contributed to the journal's aspirations. On behalf of readers and the
Editorial Board, I would like to acknowledge our outgoing Editor, Barb Sims, for
her commitment to securing the viability and growth of the journal, and for easing
the transition for me. Barb has passed Critical Criminology to the Editorial Board
and I in excellent shape, and we thank her. Remembering too, that we are an
international journal, let me also acknowledge the hard work and energy of Mark
Israel (Flinders University) and Jo Goodey (European Monitoring Centre on
Racism and Xenophobia), who will continue to serve as Editors for the Pacific Rim
and Europe respectively.
The role of Editor is an honor but also entails great responsibilities. As Editor, my
first obligation will be to ensure that high quality manuscripts covering a broad range
of topics and methodologies (within the broadly defined field of critical criminology)
continue to be solicited and published in a timely fashion. In addition, I will
