1 Consultant's Dig. 1 (1991)

handle is hein.journals/cnsldig1 and id is 1 raw text is: Consultant Introduces Total Enrollment

New Publication
W e offer this new publication Consultant's Digest
in an effort to bring more current information
about legal education to the attention of our
constituencies. We anticipate a biannual publication
with the May issue containing a variety of reports regard-
ing the state of American legal education and the No-
vember issue containing information about special
studies and workshops. The Consultant's office is a great
repository of information concerning legal education in
the United States. We believe that there are a variety of
subjects about which members of the profession, the
professorate and the student consumer seek information.
The changing composition of the law student population,
the explosion in law school curricular offerings and
methodologies, the growth of law school administrative
services, and the financing of legal education are but
some of the topics to be explored in Consultant's Digest.
This publication is then offered in a spirit of sharing.
Study on Promotion
and Tenure Policies
In 1987, the Office of the Consultant undertook a
study on policies used by ABA approved law schools
in faculty promotion and tenure decisions. Deans of
all ABA approved law schools were asked to submit
promotion and tenure policies. These submissions, which
were often many pages long, were summarized and put
into a table. The table was then distributed to deans and
other interested parties.

Increases for Fourth
Straight Year
T he total number of Juris Doctor students at ABA-
approved law schools in the fall semester of 1990
was 127,261, a 2.2 percent increase from the 1989
fall semester. Enrollment of first year students increased
.6 percent in 1990. Total overall enrollment (J.D., Post-
J.D., and Other) also increased this year by 2.1 percent.
A breakdown of the J.D. enrollment statistics shows
that the number of women entering law school has
decreased slightly this year. Minority enrollment how-
ever continues to increase. The percentage of first year
women decreased from 42.7 percent in 1989 to 42.5
percent in 1990. Overall women represent 42.15 percent
of all law students in 1990, a slight decrease from 42.27
percent in 1989.
