From the Editor's desk
Welcome to our readers this first volume of Criminal Justice Studies: A Critical Jour-
nal of Crime, Law and Society for 2011. This edition of the journal includes articles
from contributors from Israel, Norway, and a member of Gray's Inn writing from the
UK plus all our American contributors.
The first article, 'Understanding the Relationship between Perceptions of Crime
Seriousness and Recommended Punishment: An Exploratory Comparison of Adults
and Adolescents,' is written by Tomer Einat (Bar-Ilan University, Israel) and Sergio
Herzog (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel). Their study 'argues that youths
constitute a social subculture that is not necessarily concordant with the moral values
and norms shared by the general adult culture.' Their research compares 'adolescents'
and adults' seriousness perceptions of juvenile crimes and punishments,' an area
never conducted in Western countries.
'Characteristics of the Internet for Criminal Child Sexual Abuse by Online Groom-
ers,' by Julia Davidson (Kingston University, UK) and Petter Gottschalk (Norwegian
School of Management, Norway), presents the characteristics on the Internet attracting
online groomers. 'Relevant Internet characteristics include disconnected personal
communication, mediating technology, universality, network externalities, distribution
channel, ... etc.' What they demonstrate in their article is how potential sex offenders
join virtual communities, whereby they meet persons having similar interests.
Angela R. Gover (University of Colorado Denver, USA), Elizabeth A. Tomsich
(University of Colorado Denver, USA), Wesley G. Jennings (University of South
Florida, USA), and George E. Higgins (University of Louisville, USA) have written,
'An Exploratory Study on Perceptions of Safety, Fear of Crime, and Victimization
Experiences among Faculty and Staff at an Urban University: A Focus on Gender.' It
is their belief that crime and victimization on college campuses 'has received a consid-
erable amount of empirical attention, with the majority of studies utilizing student
samples.' But in order to understand how crime impacts the overall campus environ-
ment, they study these issues from the point of view of both college faculty and staff.
Zia Akhtar, a member of Gray's Inn (and from the UK), presents in his research,
'Pine Ridge Deaths, Mistrials, and FBI Counter Plo Operations,' a look at why the
Oglala Sioux Indian Tribe has accused the FBI of covering up the homicides of their
members in 1970. In his words, '[B]y its repressive tactics, the USA has executed a
neocolonial policy on Native Americans, of which this is an example and its inception
lies in the genocidal policies of forced removal, dismemberment, and assimilation.'
He puts forward the idea that the upcoming prosecution, as well as the defamation of
activists on Pine Ridge, requires an official inquiry to wipe the slate clean. In the
words of one reviewer of this article, 'the author makes a legitimate contribution to
the literature on Indian affairs within the context of law enforcement, and its clandes-
tine activities to control American Indian activism.'
