The first papers from the long awaited Violence Against Women Survey
address some new issues and provide new insights into some familiar
ones. The Survey itself heralds a new era in the study of violence against
women and represents a watershed in this area of research. From de-
sign and development to method and measurement, the VAW Survey sets
new standards in victim surveys that will undoubtedly provide a model
for this type of research well into the next century. Simultaneously, the
highest standards of scientific rigor are observed along with concerns
about the safety and welfare of subjects. Detailed data about violence,
rather than conflict, and about the contexts and consequences of vio-
lence have been added to the base of knowledge upon which enhanced
descriptions and explanations may be based and from which theoretical
and empirical debates may be launched or tried yet again. Some of
the papers herein will no doubt generate further discussions and debate
in this important area of study.
