Editorial

Welcome to Criminal Behaviour and Mental Health. If the
length of gestation is directly related to the quality of the
newborn then this journal should be excellent. David Farring-
ton and I perceived a need for such a journal as long ago as
1975. We believed and still believe that there is a place for a
serious academic journal which embraces a number of
disciplines that study socially unacceptable behaviours. The
disciplines that we considered to be of primary importance
were our own: forensic psychiatry, psychology and criminol-
ogy! Criminology has its roots in forensic psychiatry, although
these days it is more closely associated with psychology, and
we feel that scientific cross-fertilisation between these subjects
is still of great importance. Our first efforts to produce such a
journal led instead to a small series of year books - a series
called Current Research in Forensic Psychiatry and Psychol-
ogy (Gunn & Farrington, 1982; Farrington & Gunn, 1988a,b).
After three volumes this stopped and our, then, publisher
decided against going on to a journal as we had hoped. We
were therefore delighted when Pamela Taylor introduced us
to Harold Maxwell, and via him to Colin Whurr who was hoping
to start a journal such as this and who has taken us and our
ideas on with alacrity.
Whether the journal's long gestation will in fact lead to
excellence depends on our readers and contributors. We
therefore want an active dialogue with you about standards,
ideas for improvement, new columns and the like. Let me
explain some of the first ideas. We want to publish material of
a high scholastic standard. It does not have to be scientific, but
we expect there to be a bias towards scientific papers. We
