DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE.

In the Provinces of Canada to-day, there are
hundreds of lawyers daily striving to emulate Psychic
Miracles, in comparison with which the performances
of the hero of Stevenson's wonderful nightmare
draina fade into insignificance. Functioning at one
moment as Mr. Jekyll, the Solicitor, he must, in the'
twinkling of an eye, assume the role of Mr. Hyde, the
Barrister, or if the simile thus put offends, you are at
liberty to reverse it.
In all older countries, one finds the profession of
law divided into two separate branches, with a well
defined line of demarcation 'between the practitioners
of each.  In England, Scotland and Ireland this
separation has now existed long enough in its present
form for time, the infallible Judge of good and evil, to
definitely and finally pronounce in its favour, and it
has never been suggested there, either by the Barrister
or by the Solicitor, that a double-barrelled legal
luminary would be an advantage to either, to the
Public or to the State. That the occutpations of attor-
ney and advocate should be merged in the early days
of a new country may be a necessary expedient, but it
is surely a most undesirable makeshift and ought to
be abandoned at the earliest possible moment at which
the progress of the country permits. Has not Canada
already reached that point?
An Attorney meaning simply one who acts for
another and an Advocate one who pleads for another,
they much more clearly show the essential difference
between the equivalents, Solicitor and Barrister, in
use in England and Canada. Indeed, it is no compli-
ment to be called a Solicitor in some countries, par-
ticularly in the United States of America for instance,
where it is applied 'to. a 'travelling salesman or
