Editorial

1 INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Volume 9(1) of the Cambridge International Law Journal (CILJ). This
issue continues the CILJ's strong tradition of publishing high-quality research from
contributors ranging from senior academics to young scholars. The CILJ holds a spe-
cial distinction among academic journals of being both peer-reviewed and student-run.
As such, the CILJ has the pleasure each year of engaging with esteemed academics
involved in our review and advisory processes, while training the next generation of
scholars who will join them.
The CILJ has always sought to build meaningful relationships that further the aca-
demic network of those involved in contributing to and creating the CILJ. This year
has been no exception. In continuing the strong connection between the CILJ and
the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law (LCIL) at the University of
Cambridge, in November 2019 we co-hosted the Joint CILJ-LCIL Annual Lecture.
We were extremely honoured and delighted to have Professor Pierre-Marie Dupuy pre-
sent the Annual Lecture. Professor Dupuy spoke on the unity of the international order
to an overflowing (standing-room only) audience ranging from students to senior aca-
demics, all eager to hear from one of the most esteemed and influential international
lawyers of the last 50 years. Professor Dupuy's remarks appear in this Volume 9(1).
As per all Editors-in-Chief, our gratitude extends to a great many people without
which this Volume 9(1) would not have been possible. We are sincerely grateful to
our publisher, Edward Elgar Publishing, for their cooperation and assistance in the
publication process and, in particular, to Ben Booth, Marina Bowgen, Phillip
Thompson and Nick Wilson. We are particularly appreciative of the tireless commit-
ment and fastidious attention to detail of our Managing Editors (Ibrahim A Alturki,
Tom Boekestein, Oliver Hailes, So Yeon Kim and Jessie Smith) and our General
Editors who with ease and accuracy managed the review and copy-editing process
from start to finish. We are also grateful to the members of our Academic Review
Board and ad hoc reviewers for their time and expertise in peer-reviewing submissions
which provides an important contribution to ensuring the publication of manuscripts of
the highest quality. Our thanks also extend to our Honorary Editor-in-Chief, Professor
Eyal Benvenisti, and to the members of our Faculty Advisory Board, Professor
Catherine Barnard, Professor John Bell (part-year), Professor Jorge E Vifluales
(part-year) and Dr Kate Miles for their advice and direction.
This year we bid farewell to long-standing Senior Treasurer and member of our
Faculty Advisory Board, Professor John Bell, for whose ever-present support and gui-
dance we, and our predecessors, are immensely appreciative. We welcomed in his
stead as member of our Faculty Advisory Board, Professor Jorge E Vifluales,
Harold Samuel Chair of Law and Environmental Policy at the University of
Cambridge, and as Senior Treasurer, Dr Andrew Sanger, one of the inaugural
Editors-in-Chief of the CILJ (then known as the Cambridge Journal of International
and Comparative Law) and now Lecturer in International Law at the University of
Cambridge. We also welcomed Tony Zhou as Junior Treasurer, taking the place of
Ivan Lee, who capably guided the CILJ in all financial matters for the past three aca-
demic years and for whose commitment and diligence we are extremely grateful.
