From the Editor

Writing this editorial for the final issue of Legal Information Alert and Business
Information Alert is bittersweet. For 30 years, Alert Publications, Inc. has been
making a contribution to legal and business information professionals with our
exclusive articles and product reviews. When I started this venture in 1981 as
the U.S. Law Library Alert, the newsletter was the first non-association peri-
odical offered to law librarians as a source of critical and unbiased information.
In 1981, the information landscape was changing rapidly with emerging new
tools and ways of conducting legal research.
Since that time, the information landscape changed forever with the advent
of the Internet and now the research world is changing again. Social media-
Facebook and Twitter- is where everyone is conversing, sharing information,
referring research material and tips, and even starting their research projects.
Blogs and e-publishing have made it easy to publish information and research
guides with the result that information is overwhelming (and unfortunately
transient). What I have always loved about print newsletters is that you could
read them in one sitting (I know, I know-that's a lifetime in the social media
world) and have them on hand for future reference. If you are not near a Wi-Fi
connection, or the Internet goes down, that is of no consequence if you have a
print newsletter. But I have to admit that print and even online (so hot just
a little while ago) have moved down a notch on the information gathering
ladder to make room for what social media is offering.
Since we announced the end of our newsletter publishing, we have heard
many comments about how valuable our content was and how it was valued by
our long-time subscribers. We are still working on our plans to continue
providing this content to researchers through aggregators, the HeinOnline
archive of our newsletters, and our own new publishing venture that will
feature in-depth reports, blogs, and other ways of delivering the content you
need without the necessity of annual subscriptions. So stay tuned-and of
course, we will announce it via Twitter!
So it is the end of an era at Alert Publications. There were many who joined
me along the way. Although these colleagues are too numerous to mention,
