Looking Back and Looking Ahead:
Business Information Review 2009
and the Outlook for 2010
by Sylvia James
he beginning of a New Year is always a good time to look at a broad view of life and work in business
information and I have been doing this for my articles each January for the last few years. So, contin-
uing this tradition for January 2010, I have been thinking long and hard about business information
prospects. For the last few months, I have also been researching several aspects of business information activity
as I prepared to write this article.
Working Conventionally or Not?
The first and overwhelming impression I have looking back at 2009, was that the practice of formal business
information research has taken a real battering in this recession economy. This is not surprising, but the list of
in-house corporate business information units and departments that
have closed grew ever longer during the year, following a similarly
depressing trend during 2008. It would seem that the aspiring and ambi-
tious business information professional has quite poor prospects forIn Tbis Issue
