State of the World: A Look at Business
Information in 2008
by SylviaJames
At the turn of the year it is a good exercise to reflect on business information by looking forward to the
New Year, but also taking a clear look at the important events of the previous year. The year 2007
turned out to be a watershed in all kinds of ways, with events changing the nature of the global busi-
ness climate and, in turn, our work as business information professionals.
Back Stories
This article is one of several I have written on this general theme for the Business Information Alert. As long ago as
2003 I wrote about the future of business information as a specialty in the financial services sector (The Future of
Financial Services and the Information Professional, January 2003).

to be the most significant I have written on this theme of the macro-envi-
ronment in which we work. I started out to write on the state of the art
on purely business information, with perhaps a comment or two on the 6 Comings & Goings in the
major mergers in our sector. Early on in my background reading and Business Information World
preparation, I realized that as we head into 2008, there was a much 8 News and Trends
