by Sylvia James
T is is the last of three articles on compiling
international company lists. In the first article,
I presented the rationale for preparing lists as
a routine practice in many international business
research projects. The sources and source groups that
might be used to help construct the lists were detailed
in the second article.
This final article gives you a look at an actual case
study. I continue to compile lists for individual clients
who work as advisors in corporate finance and private
equity positions. As I have shown you in the two pre-
vious articles, these lists can provide answers in busi-
ness research projects concerned with some company
purchases and divestitures. Many of the criteria dis-
cussed in this case study were also used in those lists.
The Real Business Hot 100: The
Challenge
The most significant list I have been asked to prepare

in recent years is used in a feature article in the presti-
gious U.K. business journal RealBusiness, published by
Caspian Publishing, Ltd., in London (www.realbusi-
ness.co.uk). For the last three years, I have researched
this list of the fastest-growing U.K. companies. It is a
significant and unusual project in that it is the only
regular piece of research I do that is completely open
to public scrutiny. Often business readers question the
appearance of a company in the list and contact the
editor for an explanation of why certain companies
were included. Even more likely is that a managing
director or founder of a business will take the editor to
task, because their company was not included on the
list. This, of course, means that the selection and com-
pilation have to be absolutely accurate, and every one
of the nine list criteria have to be rigorously, fairly, and
systematically applied. It also means that I have to be
prepared to defend my choices and the quality of the
research. There is a definite international element to
the list in that companies are often owned by individ-
uals not based in the U.K., and many have interna-
tional reach through their activities.
