Information Products

T here's a new role for us to think about in
today's information space: the librarian as
publisher. It's not really new, of course.
Librarians have been putting together publications
of various kinds for our end users-and for each
other-for a long time. But in a world where most
people see information gathering as a largely self-
service function, the publishing role has become
more relevant and important to us than ever.
End users want to, and believe they can, find the
information they need for themselves. It may seem
like heresy to say so, but in many ways they are right.
Just by virtue of doing more information seeking, they
are getting better at it: better at locating information,
evaluating its quality and relevance, and organizing
their search.
We can still do it better, of course. We can save
them time, effort, and money, and we continue to
guide, teach, and demonstrate the value of our profes-

sional expertise. But we also have to meet users where
they are. We have to make sure that when they do go
looking, they benefit from the fruits of our labors; the
results of our advanced ability to find, evaluate, orga-
nize, and provide access to information.
Meeting the Competition
In a world overflowing with self-service information,
we have to compete for user's attention. One way we re
competing is by putting together online publications
that our clients, customers, or patrons not only can
locate, but also find usefil enough to return to.
We've been doing this, in a sense, since the first
librarian organized a listserv, put up a web site, or
roughly converted a print bibliography to HTML. But
there's more to this than simply making our traditional
information skills visible on the Web. For many of us
it represents a shift in focus, from information services
to information products.
I became acutely aware of this as a librarian at
