Intranets East 2000-Conference Report and Reflections

by Elizabeth Farley
T he state of intranet implementation is like a
big puzzle in progress: enough completed so
that we can tell what the picture is, but some
of the fundamental pieces are missing and leave gap-
ing holes. At the very least, we know what an
intranet does; we know what we would like it to do
for our organization, and we have some decent
examples of what other organizations have accom-
plished. But we are still thin in our understanding of
who does what, when, and how. Not only do we not
fully understand the roles that information technolo-
gy (IT) people, software designers, Web designers,
external content providers, librarians or information
specialists, end users, and upper management should
play-many of us don't even know if all of these
groups should be involved. That leaves a lot of miss-
ing pieces in your puzzle when you're trying to create
quite a big picture.
About the Conference
Intranets East 2000 (uwww.intranetseast.com), held last
September, is a smaller, localized version of the annual
Intranets Conference produced by Online, Inc.

According to Online, it is designed to provide attendees
with practical, real-world intranet strategies, culminating
in a roadmap for constructing a best-practice intranet.
Attendees for this three-day conference were advertised
as including such diverse titles as intranet managers &
specialists, Web masters, content designers, senior execu-
tives, project managers, MIS & IT professionals, web
site developers, information specialists, knowledge pro-
fessionals, product/sales/marketing managers, and many
other e-business/Web-focused titles. I certainly spotted
most of these on the attendee list.
The heavy-duty techies had talks geared towards
them on Information Architecture in Detail,
Information Security and Sharing, and Applying
Best Practices of Information Design to Build a
Compelling and Easy-to-Use Intranet. Web content
people enjoyed Information Architecture: What it is
and Why it's Important, Content Management
Tools for a Corporate Intranet, and Challenges of
Developing Multilingual and International Sites. All
of us benefited from the keynote speakers, Alfred
Grasso, vice president and chief information officer of
the MITRE Corp. and Chris Perretta, chief technolo-
gy officer of GE Capital. We learned that MITRE
heavily involves its large library and top management
