Commerce Department:
Information Maze Untangled
By Steven E. Mitchel
If you request a packet of information from the U.S. Department of Commerce,
you will receive it in an envelope imprinted with the phrase 75 Years of
Stimulating America's Progress. One of the many ways that the Commerce
Department tries to do this is by gathering and disseminating information that
is potentially useful for the American business community. The Commerce
Department is the premier statistics-gathering agency in the federal govern-
ment; chances are that the facts or analysis that you need are available from
Commerce, and probably from nowhere else.
The only problem for a researcher is to navigate the huge maze of offices,
programs, experts, publications, and raw data that Commerce has constructed.
But even a partial list of information needs that Commerce can meet is enough
to tempt a business researcher to enter that maze.
Marketing. Commerce gathers a vast array of statistical data that can help with
locating a business, marketing strategy, and other steps in business planning,
such as population characteristics, housing, number and types of business
establishments, transportation, production, consumption, inventory, retail
trade, wholesale trade, and manufacturing. Statistics are broken down in a
variety of ways, including industry, product, and region.
The Bureau of the Census is the most active division of Commerce in this
area, with a wide selection of statistical products (of which the decennial census
of population is only the beginning) and a staff of experts to back it up.
Economic Analysis. Gross National Product, Consumer Price Index, and other
economic indicators that make the news are only the tip of the iceberg. The
Bureau of Economic Analysis uses the data gathered by the Bureau of the Census
and other agencies to measure economic activity and assess economic trends.
Importing and Exporting. The International Trade Administration and other
divisions of Commerce gather data on foreign trade and foreign economies and
can advise businesses on licensing, protocol, quotas, duties, exporting oppor-
tunities, and market potential. Particularly noteworthy are the ITA's staff of
country experts in Washington and its many field offices throughout the country
involved in outreach to the business community.
Financing. Commerce provides grants, loans, and other programs of financial
assistance and advice, and also keeps track of similar programs in other agencies.
