THE BRIEF
Volume 67, Number 1 Fall, 1971
President's Page
When a person reaches the not so exalted position as
the titular head of a professional legal fraternity, I suppose
he might be expected to render profound words of wisdom
and advice upon which undergraduates and barrister mem-
bers alike could seize and be uplifted and inspired.
Not so this titular head.
In the first place, the luxury of profound thought is re-
served to those who have the time for it and believe the
recipients might follow it. In the second place, I just recent-
ly observed that the students don't want it and the barristers
say: Who needs it?
Today's law students are practical persons most of whom
are serious minded and environmentally oriented. This at-
titude was evident at the last general convention in Toron-
to, Canada, where the student committee work constituted
a great deal more than the rubber stamp and more than
mere suggestions. The work reflected a feeling by the broth-
ers that the fraternity must sway with the public tide.
We who have taken on the gratuitous responsibility of
administering the affairs of this fraternity recognize this
obligation and agree with it. We sincerely hope that we will
not be administering to this organization.
If all the actives were as sincere as those who were dele-
gates to the convention, we would feel no qualms about the
future. But in some areas, we are having trouble. The cause
is the antithesis of the cure, i.e., lack of continuity of re-
sponsible control. With continuity we thrive, without it
we're dead.
Each Inn must see to it that each new set of officers
recognize their responsibility to make the Inn a real part
of the life of a law student.
