BRIT. J. CRIMINOL. (2020) 60,1-2

                                  EDITORIAL

                               EAMONN CARRABINE

This volume marks the 60th anniversary of the British Journal of Criminology and, over
this long history, it has established itself as a leading institution in British and inter-
national criminology. Although it is unusual for the editor of the journal to provide an
editorial for a new issue, this one is the first of my term as Editor in Chief. Like every
editor before me, no doubt, I am keenly aware of the responsibility tied to the role and
certainly realize I have big shoes to fill. I am privileged to be taking up the reins fol-
lowing the outstanding example set by Sandra Walklate.
During her tenure, Sandra sustained the high standards set by her predecessors
through her own authoritative tone and inimitable style. Her intellectual, as well as
practical contributions to the journal's continuing success has been enormous. Sandra
joined the editorial board in 2005, became an editor in 2012 and was elected to Editor
in Chief from January 2014. Throughout this time she has ensured that the journal
continues to attract the very best scholarship in the discipline, maintaining the quality
of content for which it is renowned and published work at the forefront of the latest de-
velopments in criminology. The current editorial team owes a lot of thanks for all her
hard work and commitment to sustaining the journal's relevance in what is a changing
academic journal landscape.
For decades the BJC was one of only two outlets publishing criminological work in
the UK (the other being the Howard Journal) and it is only since the late 1990s that
these journals have been joined by many others. The trend has been toward increas-
ingly specialist titles, yet it is also an indication of the rapid growth and global reach
of criminology. Indeed, the increasingly international nature of the content published
by the BJC necessitated a new subtitle for the journal in 2007: An International Review
of Crime and Society. The occasion was taken as an opportunity to emphasize the inter-
nationalism of the journal and remind potential contributors that the BJC welcomes
contributions from a variety of perspectives on crime and society. These span the
humanities and social sciences, including sociology, law, social policy, history, phil-
osophy, anthropology, politics, cultural and media studies, psychology, geography and
more besides.
Then, as now, the interests of the Editorial and International Advisory Boards are
broad and are not restricted to a rigid conception of what criminology either should
be or how it is currently conceived. The journal has a well-deserved reputation for
the rigour and intellectual honesty of the review process. The two main criteria for
publication remain the degree to which the article contributes new knowledge to an
understanding of crime and society and the overall quality of the argument and its
presentation. It is often said that a journal is only as good as the contributions it re-
ceives. The success of the BJC ultimately rests on the flair and imagination of authors.
