Of Law Books Volume 17, No. 1 January/February 2006

Interview with Edward J. Hickling, Ph.D., Co-Author
with Edward B. Blanchard, of After the
Crash: Psychological Assessment and Treatment of
Survivors of Motor Vehicle Accidents, (Washington,
D.C: American Psychological Association 2d ed. 2004)
ISBN 1-59147-107006, pp.473

Editor's Note: Edward B. Blanchard, Ph.D. is the past
Director of the Center for Stress and Anxiety Disorders
at the University of Albany, and a Distinguished
Professor of Psychology. Dr. Edward J. Hickling is
in Private Practice in Albany and an adjunct faculty at
the SUNY-Albany and Albany Medical College.

Q. Ed, could you tell our readers a little about the
principal conceptual themes covered in your book? I
understand it has become a best seller in the
therapeutic and psychological communities.

The book covers major themes of the incidence of post
traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related psychological
disorders following car crashes, factors that contribute to the
onset of psychological disorders after MVAs, delayed onset
of PTSD, forensic concerns, impact on psychosocial aspects
of life, and a comprehensive treatment approach with
empirically proven effectiveness for treating these problems.

Q. How did you first get interested in the topic of
posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from motor
vehicle accidents (MVA)?

Back in the early 1980's we noted that people in my practice
were showing what looked like PTSD. I had worked in the
Albany Veterans Administration Hospital for a number of
years before leaving to go into private practice, and the
people I saw in my practice seemed to show similar
symptoms following their motor vehicle accidents. The
literature at that time didn't address this population, and it
led to having a few of the patients getting evaluated at
SUNY-A, in Dr. Blanchard's Psychophysiological laboratory.
This led to our first grant application to the National
Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and our funding to
begin our clinical research.

Q. In your research, what are the most critical variables
related to recovering quickly from the psychological
effects of MVA?

People tend to recover most quickly when they have a strong
support system, good premorbid adjustment, no prior
history of PTSD, were not experiencing depression when the
accident occurred, and did not suffer a physical injury that
lingers.

Q. What proportion of MVA survivors develop
PTSD? How does your research compare to other
research studies?

The answer is probably somewhere between 20 and 40%
depending upon how the sample is drawn. Our best estimate
