Volume 11 Number 1 January-February 2000

An Interview with Charles E. Rounds, Jr.,
author of Loring A Trustee's Handbook.
Charles E. Rounds, Jr. NY: Aspen Publishers,
2000 ed. 1109 p. ISBN 0-7355-1381-3. $125.00.
Interviewer: Edward J. Bander. Interviewee:
Charles E. Rounds, Jr. Professor of Law,
Suffolk University Law School.

Bander: The 2000 Edition of Loring A
Trustee's Handbook is now out. The First
Edition's copyright is dated 1898. Obviously you
were not the author. Who was?
Rounds: A Boston lawyer and trustee by the
name of Augustus Peabody Loring. He authored
four editions of the Handbook. The Fourth
Edition was published in 1928.

Bander: Who took over from Mr. Loring.
Rounds: A Boston lawyer by the name of Mayo
Adams Shattuck authored the Fifth Edition. That
came out in 1940. James F. Farr, also a Boston
lawyer, authored the Sixth Edition. Its date was
1962. The Seventh Edition, which I was privi-
leged to write, was published in 1994.

Bander: Will there be an Eighth Edition?
Rounds: No, not labeled as such. After the
Seventh Edition, we switched to yearly revi-
sions. Since the Seventh Edition, there has
been a 1996 Edition, a 1997 Edition, a 1998
edition, and a 1999 Edition. The 2000 Edition is a
brand new edition of the Handbook. It replaces
all prior editions including the Seventh Edition.
Loring does not have pocket parts.

Bander: Did you say Little, Brown is the pub-
lisher?
Rounds: It was, through the 1997 Edition. With
the 1998 Edition, the baton was passed to Panel
Publishers.

Bander: Is Loring a Massachusetts book?
Rounds: Absolutely not. The book is national in
scope. Lawyers, judges, accountants, bankers,
financial planners, trustees and their beneficia-
ries from Carmel to Manhattan, from Dallas to
Palm Beach subscribe to it. In Mr. Loring's time, it
had a Boston flavor to it. But no more.
