LAW JOURNAL

         July 2022
         Dear Comunidad:
The Berkeley La Raza Law Journal (LRLJ) has devoted itself to showcasing the
written works of Latinx scholars and practitioners since its inception in 1981. The
exclusionary policies embedded in our educational institutions created a vacuum in legal
academia during that era. In response, Berkeley Law students carved a space to uplift
Latinx voices and issues through the founding of the LRLJ. Despite the waves of challenges
we as a community have faced since that time, we remain committed to this mission.
Over a year after the COVID-19 pandemic first gripped the world, society began
to slowly emerge from our shelter in place to a world with new challenges at every
corner. The devastation caused by the pandemic was soon overtaken by the chaos of war,
inflation, and most recently, the dismantling of rights once guaranteed. The need to speak
truth to power and continue advocating on behalf of our shared communities is as dire as
ever.
Volume 32 is proud to present written works from two practicing criminal
defense attorneys. The first piece highlights the importance and benefits of recruiting
attorneys of color for public defense offices throughout the country. The benefits of shared
experiences between indigent clients and the attorneys who represent them cannot be
understated. The second piece discusses the urgent issue of acquired citizenship for
children forced to leave the U.S. as a result of their parents deportation. It advocates for a
Fifth Amendment Due Process right to appoint counsel for individuals as they navigate
complex consular citizenship adjudications.
Balancing ever-changing COVID-19 policies while remaining committed to the
Journal's mission of building community and relationships was a demanding challenge.
The pandemic taught us not all traditions can survive the remote world and that it was
important for us to instill new administrative measures to protect the Journal's legacy. As
the leaders responsible for forging the path back from pandemic isolation to a post-COVID
world, we wanted to create a new internal system for transitioning leaders. We hoped this
new system would ease future generations and equip them with tools so they could focus
truly on what matters most: uplifting Latinx voices. This change would not have been
possible without the work of our outstanding board and members. Thank you so much to
all our members for working tirelessly to ensure the Journal's success. It truly took a
village. We hope the administrative steps the board took will allow for seamless transitions
between volumes for generations to come.
Last but not least, we share that this will not be the last edition of the La Raza
Law Journal. Although years prior discussed the potential of changing our name, we have
voted to maintain the legacy of our name while also changing the definition of what it
means to us, Berkeley Law, the Latinx community. This is not the end of the discussion.
Perhaps future boards will decide to change the name. We researched, discussed, and voted
on what was right for us at this moment in our time. We accept and hope that those after
us will do the same. Until then, we will continue to be the first, but not the only, La Raza
Law Journal. iPor la raza habla el espiritu!
We sincerely hope you enjoy LRLJ's Vol. 32.
         In solidarity,
Chloe Angel Amarilla & Juan Martin Cabrales
         Editors-in-Chief, Volume 32
