Berkeley Law
July 2021
Dear comunidad:
For the last forty years, Berkeley Law's La Raza Law Journal (LRLJ) has worked to
uplift authors of color and raise awareness of issues affecting the Latinx community. This
year, despite facing the virtual challenges and uncertainty from the COVID-19 global
pandemic and nationwide protests advocating for police and prison abolition, we proudly
share LRLJ's 31st volume with you.
The first half of volume contains pieces on xenophobia and discrimination, the Latinx
experience in family court and mediation, and public housing's poor conditions. This
year, we designated the second half of the volume as a special space for Berkeley law
students to freely write short pieces on issues they are passionate about. Thank you to
everyone who entrusted us with their work. We hope Volume 31 contributes to the
liberation of Black people and people of color.
The virtual academic year made relationship and community building more difficult than
ever. Volume 31 would not have been possible without everyone's unwavering
commitment to the Journal. Thank you to all our board members, editors, and authors
for their dedication throughout the publishing process, and thank you to our donors for
believing in the Journal's mission.
Volume 31 could also be the last ever La Raza Law Journal volume to be published. U.C.
Berkeley's LRLJ was the first legal journal in the nation created by Latinx students to
uplift Latinx scholars and to spotlight and seek solutions to issues relevant to our
community. Despite what La Raza means to some, its exclusionary connotations and
racist roots cannot be ignored today. We believe a name change will better suit the
Journal's ultimate purpose to continue advocating for the community through legal
scholarship, and we look forward to working with Volume 32 to enact this change
We hope you enjoy LRLJ's Vol. 31.
Abiertamente,
Isabella Coelho & Ariel Flores Mena
