handle is hein.journals/ausnewma18 and id is 1 raw text is: Editorial This may, or may not, be the last issue of the MLAANZ Journal depending on the decision of the Executive following a survey of the membership on whether to continue to publish the journal in its present form or at all. I urge all members to participate in the decision making process regardless of their position on this question. I do not wish to write as though the decision is affait accompli, but this is an opportune time to thank Michael White for all his efforts as General Editor. For those readers who are unaware, Michael stepped down from this position a few months ago, and I assumed the task of completing the editing of this volume, for which he had already begun to commission articles. The content of this issue was therefore largely already determined. Whatever the eventual decision, there will still be a need for the Executive to communicate with the membership, and there will still be ongoing commitments with respect to publication of the Frank Stuart Dethridge Memorial Address and the Morella Calder Prizewinning Essay. There have been a lot of developments in the maritime world since the last issue of the journal was being prepared, amongst the most important of which has probably been the requirement for ports and ships to comply with the International Ship and Port Security Code. The shipping industry itself is undergoing changes, particularly in the world liner and dry bulk markets and amongst the big players. Marine environmental issues have come to the fore, and this is reflected in some of the articles in the current issue of the journal. There have been major changes in the regulatory environment. There is renewed concern about substandard shipping. These and other ongoing issues concern our wide-ranging membership, and I am pleased that this issue of the journal continues to reflect our disparate interests. I hope that readers will find something of interest to them and may even be stimulated to share their own thoughts and ideas and professional experience with a wider audience.
