Sherry was in tenth grade at the time, and as a result of her displacement she dropped out of high school. Over the next year and a half, she slept outside, in abandoned homes, and in the homes of strangers. She had no money and no food, and did what she had to do in order to survive. One winter night, she was alone and had nowhere to go. She became so desperate that she caused a ruckus at a shopping center and purposely got arrested just so she would have a warm place to sleep that night. At the time, she did not care whether the police locked her up indefinitely because at least she would have food to eat, a place to sleep, and clothes to wear. The next morning, she was taken to a homeless shelter where she enrolled in an alternative school. The conditions were so rough at the school that she quit after about two weeks, and decided to take the General Educational Development Test (G.E.D). At the time, she was just fifteen and a half years old.
