THE NEW PRESIDENT'S FOREWORD It has sometimes been remarked by criminologists of particular perspicacity that criminology is a very practical, scholarly discipline. In fact, the tendency is for the reflective, scholarly endeavours of criminologists to fade into almost complete obscurity in the face of practical, criminological events. In difficult times, these events dramatically overrun scholarly perspectives. Even at quieter times scholars and researchers struggle to keep pace with the apparently inexhaustible supply of criminological happenings. Many have abandoned their involvement. Others, of course, have, for various reasons, never taken up the challenge. They stick very much to their ivory towers. Australia is moving through one of these difficult times at the moment. Mention of just some of the present criminological developments provides much food for thought. At the Federal level there is a Royal Commission on Aboriginal deaths in custody, the National Crime Authority has been granted tenure, the Director of Public Prosecutions is increasingly active, a major report on tentencing is soon to be handed down by the Law Reform Commission, and the former Chief Justice of Australia, Sir Harry Gibbs, is leading a large scale examination of the Federal criminal law. 2
