              THE NEW PRESIDENT'S FOREWORD
An enduring theme of incoming Presidents of the Society has been that of
membership. Stanley Johnston (1976) asked whether the Society should become a
professional accreditation body or a scholarly college or what, and in any case how
could members best interact with each other? Allan Bartholomew (1978) chose the
word involvement to express his hopes for the period of his Presidency. David
Biles (1980) identified the most urgent needs as being increased membership and
more opportunities for us to meet and discuss matters of mutual interest.
