Mr. Robert L. Bennett, former Commissioner of Indian Affairs for President
Jchnson has assumed the position of Director of the Indian Law Center at the
University of New Mexico School of Law.
Mr. Bennett, an Oneida, graduated from the Haskell Indian Institute at Lawrenc-e,
Kanses in 1931 and subsequently earned his degree in law at Southeastern Univer-
sity School of Law in Oklahoma. He has worked for the BIA since 1933.
In discussing his goals as the new director of the Indian Law Center, Mr. Bennett
stated hopes to build a National Indian Law Center and eventually to have tribal
leaders from throughout the country bringing their problems to it. He noted
that any groups who want help in meeting the requirements of The 1966 Civil Rights
Act will be aided by the Center.
The Staff of the Newsletter welcomes Mr. Bennett in his new post, and wishes him
the best of luck in his work here.
