Membership, Public Service, Judicial Affairs
It wa a year of expansion
Symbolized by the addition to the
Amnerican Bar Center, dedicated on
0ctober 15, the ABA grew and expanded
its iervces in a number of directions
during 1971.
Membership peaed at 155,399 as
13,164 new members joined the Asso-
ciation. At the ame time law school
enrollment increased by 20 per cent over
the previous year.
The ABA took important steps
toward helping criminal offenders and
improving corrections systems. Young
lawyers volunteered to serve as assistant
parole officers, while others worked to
assist families of military personnel who
are prisoners of war or missing in action,
The Association has taken the lead in
pro bono publico activity. A special
project was created to assist private law  One of the highlights of the year was the ABA annual meeting in London. Here some

ABA Membership Soars to Record High of 155,399

ABA membership, despite the generally
recessive state of the national economy,
showed a net increase of 5,635 during
1971. A record high of 155,399 was
achieved by Decembe-.r 31,        toompared t

149,764 at the end of 1970 calendar
year.
New members continue to come in at
a rate well over the goal of 1,000 a
month set by the Stadding Committee on

Membership. A total of 13,164 were
elected to membership during calendar
year 1971.
Approximately 24,000 membership
invitational letters were sent to new
admittees of the bar, resulting in an
average of almost 300 new members
per month from this source
Early in 1971 mail campaigns were
conducted in the states of Arkansas,
Ohio and Utah The close of the year
saw the launching of the most ambitious
membership promotion undertaken by
the Association in 15 years Mail cam-
paigns were initiated in Arizona Illinois,
Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
An additional 40 000 piospective
members will he contacted when cam-
paigns get under way in January and
February in the following states. Califor
ia, the District of Columbia Massa
chusetts New York, Tennessee and West
Virginia.
