1. At 16oX on 9 July I returned Mr. 'ice's call. He. said that they
had been told by the State Deoartment that Pedro Iuis DIAZ Lana, former
chief of the .:bawl Revolutionary Air Force, was no longer available to the
people who wanted to see him. !;e said thatffficial stand of IS on the
aLLer is that DIAZ Lans has been admitted as a resident alien and that
IUS cannot be exi-ected to keep track of him since tais is -a free country.
He also said that unofficially he waned to inform ne that DIAZ Lanz is
under subpoena to the Senate Internal Security Subcanittee and that wet
could get in touch with him by contacting the Committee's offices. I .
thanked him for the information and said that I would refer the matter
to- yq supervisors imeediately.
2. I noticed that the conversational tune used by Nice in tell4
e the above was somewhat formal, and believe that this call was obviously
for the record. Re-enforcing may belief is the fact that Nice said he had
called me outside of custasary liaison channels because he wanted to make
sure that the nan who would have to do the work involved would be a
-of the situation. --
3. I asked. hir then if his meaning was that we could .invite DIAZ
Lans to be our vcluntary guest ror the oertod of time necessary for th
intelligence ecunnity to debrief him, and he agreed that tis. was the
case. I told him that we had only learned that DIAZ was being brought
to 6ashington yesterday afternoon and that there were many intellienol
requirements involved in the natter which we had not had sufficient t
to pouch to our nan in Hiani.
