Sulbect phoned me on 9 September 1959 to say that he was in Atlants and to ask if anything yd been done concerning our use of hin ir -the Zomirican Republi VI told bid that we are still 'vaiting the results ofrthe invesigation ana that I would be in touch with h!= when the information is complete. He said it was rather urgent that he go to the Donhican Republic because of the may rumors that something is about to start there against Cuba. I told him that I appreciated his sense of urgency but that the matter is nM e that I cnn control. Subject said that he has some business reasons for going there but that they are not - sufficiently trgent to warrant his spending his own funds for a trip to the Daoinican iiepublic at this time. He said that Joe MEROLA and a mmber of others have been discussing the counter- faiting of Umited States dollars and Cuban pesos for use in connection vith Cuban revolutionary activities. 2. i t:1 &%ett-.t i c. # e Alhi aLuer, which was a possible serius violation of United States law, I would urge him to visit the FI office in Atlanta and to give them the full story on this =atter. He said he would do so on the following day. 3. On 13 September Subject phoned me at mr home to say that he had been t see the FBI people in Atlanta an! that they had referred him to the Secret Lervice office there because of the counterfeiting aspect. He said no one seemed particularly interested in t-he gun running aspect of the situation. He said that the Sece: Service had asked him to go to Miai at his own expense to otaini further information on the atter. He asked my advice. I said that I could not influence him one way or the other on this since I was not in a position to direct his activities, but I felt he =iht be better off to take no action in regard to this sitvation since he'vas not in a position to lay out the additione.l money that would be required for another tri:, to Miai. I told Subject 1 would be in touch with him as soon as I had further inforzation caozerning our possible use of him. /- 4.4
