Stevens SUBJECT : American Defectors Reference is nade to a verbal request to you from the IC/OS for in- formation regarding any American citizens who have defected to the USSR, Red China, or other Satellite-countries during the past aighteen months- other than Bernon F. MITCHEL L. and WiLliarn H. MARTIN, and five other defectors regarding whom Mr. OTEPKA of the Stato Department Security C.fice already has information (i.e. Robert itdward- WE13bTER, L.E-18854; Le.- Harvey t'-TALD, MS-I1164; Libero EXCCARDELLI, MS-8295; Vlad- imir SLOBODA, MS-10565; an Joseph DUTKANICZ, M4S-107Z4), ecurity files reflect that the subjects of the attached memoranda are additional American citisena who have defected to the Soviets or their Satellites during the past eighteen months. Szveral of the above referred to defoctorm have been of interest to CIA: iorkert Lee NORTHRU?, 48913, was a staff employee of this Agency f rom May 1951 to May 195S. A more detailed euxrnmary than that includad in the attachad group has been prepared on him. Robert Ldward WEBSTER, £E-18852, and Nicholas PETRULLI, CE.- 19431), were subjecsof OO/C requests on 29 May 1959 and IS June 1959, respectively, with a view to their being debriefed upon their returns from visits to Russia. Neither was Interviewed by CIA, either 6eiore or after their visits. With reference to Nicholas PETRULLI, it is noted that h1 cousin. Michael Thomas SCMALLI, SSD 84258, is a former CIA covert am-. loyse, who was assigned tWC HOPEU and also took part in- PBSUCCESS. As of July 1954 he was to be doSriered as he chose to return to private employment. SCHIRALLI advised during an IRD interview in May 1953 SCHIRALLI was born and raised an Long Island; and subsequontly was employed in various places on Long Island. From February to April 1950, he was employed by a TV firm in Valley Stream, Long 1sland; at the time of his inter- view, PETRULLI was employed as a sheet metal worker in Yalley Stream,
