SouCes, A former Cuban intelligence officer who served with the Cuban
         Intelligenc; Service uatil April 1934.

     Introduction

     1. The Cuban foreign intelligence service, the General Directorate of
Intelligence (Direccion General de Inteligencia - DGI), in dis-
charging its function of protecting Cuban interests and security
and pronoting te o pol ics of the Cuban Government, employs agents
of many nationalities. Although its activities extend to Europe
and Africa, its principal agent strength is in Latin America.
Agents have in general two types of assignments: collection of
information on the local government and the local situation, and
promotion of revelutioniry activity, including guerrilla warfare.
All DGI agrnts abroad are therefore divided into two basic cate-
gories according to function: intelligence agents charged with
collection ef irformation and penetration of local governments and
organizations, who are truly clandestine, 1.6., are not'known in
their target countries as Cuban agents: and guerrilla warfare and
sabotag%% agents, charged with directing and supporting revolution-
.ary activittes, who are often known as Cuban agents to the local
Communist and lefttst groups with which they work. The two types
of agents are traincd zseparately and are controlled by different
departmenits in the DGI neadquarters in Havana, intelligence agents
by the lllcgal Departme'nt (Departamento Ilegal, called Ilegal) and
guerrilla ag, nts by the LN or National Liberation Department
       (Departa'.:nzo Ltboracton Nacional).

    2. The DOI omploys some ag'nts of Cuban nationality, as opposed to
staff member.s working abroad. They function as intelligence agents,
i.e., clandestine ag'-nts under the Illegal Department, and are
                                                                         5
