COPIES TO a

1, At 160 on 9 July I returned Mr. Nice's call. He said that tb y
had been told by the State Department that Pedro Luis DIAZ Lans, former
chief of the Cuban Revolutionary Air Force, was no longer available to the
people who wanted to see hin. He said thatidfficial stand of DiS on the
&LLer is LhaL DIAZ Lans ha been admitted as a resident alien and that
INS cannot be ezrected to keep track of hi since tai is -a free countri.
He also said that unofficially he wan.ed to inform ae that DIAZ Lans is
nder subpoena to the Senate Internal Security Subcmittee and that we
could get in touch with him by contacting the Committee's offices. I
thanked hi for the infornation and said that I would refer the matter
 to-aq supervisors immediately.

2, I noticed that the conversational tvne used by Nice in tel
me the above as somewhat formal, and believe that this call was obviual
for the record. Re-enforcing my belief is the fact that Nice said he had
called me outside of customary liaison channels becanse ho wanted to make
sure that the man who would have to do the work involved would be awar
of the situation.

3, I asked. him then if his meanig was that we could.invite DIAl
Lana to be our vcluntary guest for the period of time necessary for th
£ntellipence comnity to debrief him, and he aereed that t-is was the
case. I told him that we had only learned that DIAZ was being brought
to 1ahington yesterday afternoon and that there were nany intelligenom
requirements involved in the matter which we had not had sufficient til
to pouch to our man in Niani.
