A new epoch for the Spanish Yearbook of International Law

                                      Mariano J. Aznar*

After 17 volumes printed by Martinus Nijhoff/Brill, the Spanish Yearbook of International Law
(SYbIL) changes its face. An endeavour initiated in i99i by the Asociacion Espafiola de Profesores de
Derecho Internacional y Relaciones Internacionales (AEPDIRI) now turns entirely to its new
electronic, free full access version. We do believe that this will improve its visibility and outreach
among those interested in international law and international relations, with a particular perspective
from the Spanish Academia.
These changes had not been possible without the personal and scientific implication of the
members of the Yearbook's new Editorial Board and, of course, the work of the members of its Peer-
Review Board, who have made an effort to check the scientific quality of the contributions submitted
to the SYbIL. The impulse and total support of the AEPDIRI Board has been also crucial in this new
epoch. We try, hence, to continue the efforts of the previous Editorial Boards of the Yearbook.
The structure of the Yearbook also changes. Every new volume will be now open with the
Classic's Corner new section, which tries to gather -translated into English- seminal works of
Spanish Academia masters of the xx Century, sometimes not very well known outside Spanish
speakers, but that deserve to be kept on record because they were innovative, methodologically
brilliant or advancing new trends in international law or international relations.

After that section, the Yearbook welcomes its section on general doctrine, where different authors
discuss an array of interesting topics. Following this section, we have introduced a new approach to
Spanish practice: along with doctrinal short contributions on different issues relating to Spanish
practice, we have introduced in each volume an Agora Section which focuses on a particular relevant
aspect of that practice during the period covered by each volume. In vol. 18 the Agora compiles
different contributions about the changes introduced by the Law 1/2014 on the universal jurisdiction
in Spain.
The Yearbook closes with the Book's Review section, with brief comments on some editorial
novelties during the period covered by the volume; and the Chronicle section, which summarizes
the most important events during that period affecting Spain and its politique juridique internationale.
SYbIL tries to be a new tool in the hands of what Oscar Schachter labelled as the invisible college
of international law. We hope it will be useful for its readers!
