Drawing on theories of leadership, decision-making, power and crisis management, the five con- tributions to this forum invite readers to reflect upon the analytical implications of theorizing crisis diplomacy. The institution of the resident ambassador was created, inter alia, for preventing the emergence of conflicts and negotiating ways out of crises. It was meant to serve as a check and a means of raising the alarm when political ten- sions between sovereigns perilously deviated from 'business as usual', or, when this failed, to practise 'continuous negotiation' under conditions of war. This aspiration remains valid today, but questions increasingly arise as to whether the growing complexity and interconnectedness of the global system actually deprives diplomacy of critical assets for effectively managing international cri- ses or requires practitioners to develop new diplomatic skills.
