Landmark Resolutions Condemn
Human Rights Violations in Africa
The   seventh  ICJ   Workshop
on NGO participation in the
African Commission on Human
and Peoples Rights (ACHPR) was
held in Banjul, The Gambia, from
23-24 October 1994. It preceded
the 16th Ordinary Session of the
ACHPR which took place also in
Banjul, between   25   October-
3 November 1994. The aim of this
and all workshops is to provide
input for discussions at the ses-
sions of the ACHPR.
Following successful lobbying by
the NGCs, the ACHPR adopted several
landmark resolutions drafted by the 1CJ
Workshop on Algeria, The Gambia,
Nigeria, Rwanda, the Military, Contem-
porary Forms of Slavery, and the Hu-
0man Rights Situation in Africa. This
event highlights the increasing collabo-
ration between NGCs and the African
-Commission. The ICJ heralded the work
of the ACHPR as a milestone in the de-
velopment of human rights protection in
Africa.
Human Rights in Africa
The ACHPR urged the Algerian gov-
ernment to bring an immediate end to
7all acts of summary execution, torture
and arbitrary detention, urged all par-
y ties to respond actively to dialogue
aimed at restoring the Rule of Law, and
called on the OAU to deploy efforts to
find a just solution to the crisis. The reso-

regime to transfer power to freely cho-
