CONCUSSION

     he disease known as chronic trau-
     matic encephalopathy (CTE) is
detected at autopsy. Using immunohisto-
chemical staining technology, pathologists
look for abnormal depositions of hyper-
phosphorylated tau protein, a substance
that occurs naturally in the body and is
responsible for stabilizing nerve cells. Ifthe
staining pattern matches certain criteria,
a diagnosis is made, such as CTE, Lewy
Body disease or Alzheimer's disease. There
are many conditions in which the protein
tau accumulates in the brain; it even ac-
cumulates with aging.
   Much work is being done to corre-
late postmortem CTE pathology with







     federal judge from the District ofMin-
     nesota has dismissed the lawsuit of a
former National Hockey League (NHL)
player, who sued two NHL teams and two
insurance companies, claiming that they
were aware that the traumatic brain injuries
he suffered allegedly put him at risk for
permanent damage, but did not warn him
about the danger. The lawsuit was dismissed
on jurisdictional grounds.
   Plaintiff Michael Peluso was a former
professional hockey player, who played

function. A correlation could help us
understand and alter activity that puts us
at risk. Media focus on CTE has brought
public awareness to a subject that might
otherwise be relegated to the world of
medical literature.
   However, the matter is far from settled
in the scientific community.

currently a resident of Minnesota, and he
resided in Minnesota during the entirety of
his NHL career.
   The two team defendants in the case are
the New Jersey Devils, LLC and St. Louis
Blues Hockey Club, L.P., both of which he
played for.
   The two insurance defendants in the case
are Chubb Group Holdings, Inc. (Chubb)
and Federal Insurance Company (Federal)
