responsible for establishing all tcleran, so: pe.a cide
residues on the basis of data subittoot 1- rv<titioners
concerning the nature, level. and taxiit-i7 o the residue. the
Food and Drug administration (FD) is reiepv le fr for enogcig
tolerancet and accompliahes this by testing food sapLes to
deteraze if residwas exceed tolecance limits. the American
public has not been cdaquately protected from potential haards
of pesticide use bcause of Undequate efforts to implemeat
existin; Federal laws. EPA establisMel Urt7A tolerances witbout
sufficient text data to deterrize te 1evel of peaticide rasidue
that would likely remain on a crop after traatsont or th*
potential of the pestici4e to cause cae-or, 'A it defect, gene
mutations, or reproductive #Afficaities. IPA did not always
comply with its own procedurst for liitiag aggregate tolerances
ar~d registered pesticides for use on food crops without setting
associated tolerances. FDA gonerally did not test food for over
75S% of the pesticide residues Aor which toLeranwes had bees
established. i followup review of R& mn PDA octious indicated
that little progress has been made. Data Saps still mant.
Residues at 195 pssticides for which tolerances have bses
established are seldom,. f *ver. aoaitored in the fcod supply*
and 21 pesticides suspected of causi~a canoer have 61
individual tolerances that will not he sonitore4 by FDA's most
frequently used test. (Rg)
