Dear Mr. Long.

     vrerfer to your letter of December 1,, 1977, forwarding for
our con ideraton a letter, with enclosures, received by your office
fconcerni his claim for reimbursement of
real estate epenes ncurred incident to a transfer of his official
duty station.

     The information submitted by          shows that he was trans-
frred by the Federal Highway Administration from Atlanta, Georgia,
to Baltisre, Maryland, effective August 31, 1975.  Although he
apparently lowered the asking price several times,          had
difficulty selling his house in Atlanta, In warch, 1976, he requested
and rece4ved a 1-year extension of the initial 1-year settlement date
limitation for reimbursement of real estate oxposea. By that action
the time limitation was extended to September 1, 1977. In June 1977,

trator that the regulations did not permit an additional time extension,...
By a letter dated  ugut 10, 1977$ S-189659, we informed I-.,      that
the regulations prmitted only one extension or the ti limitation.

     Paragraph 2-6.1e of the Federal Travel Regulations (FMR), FPMR
101-7 (May 1973), establishes the applicable time limitation with
rgoard to real *state transactions. Promulgated under the statutory
authority of 5 U.S.C. 5724(a)(4) (1970), that paagraph provides in
pertinent part as follows:
          '* 1 * To the extent allowable under this
          provision, the 4overnment shall reimburse
          an employee for expetnes required to be
          paid by him in connection with the sale of
          one residence at his old official station
