The National Highway Traftic Safety Administratioesa
(NHTSA'a) public education program for the past sevex&a years
has been directed at combating the trinking-driver problem. A
major portion of the funds obligated for the progras were %sed
for contracts with advertising firas for the 4evelop[eat of
television ani radio announcements azd other priated msasial
for media placemeut. In ctrly 1977, as a cost-taving meauure,
the Department of Transportation cancelled these contracts and
proposed that this work could be done ia-house. As of Jaelaty
1978, no work has been done to devele; materials for the media.
Several State highway safety representatives noted that a
serious information void currently exists, and 3ome States*
attempts to obtain public education Itforeaties fzoa other
States have not been successful. Althguqh as independent
evaluation of the overall effectiveness of the public
information program has not been made, some studies have sbova
.hat the NHTSA public education campaign has been effective. The
public should continually receive the message that the .
drinkinq-driver problem is a serious national probles and that
everyone has a personal responsibility to help reduce the nuoer
of accidents caused by alcohol. The Federal Goverameat should
take the initiative in the development of public education
material. (aSs)
