                November 8, 1995

                The Honorable William J. Martini
                House of Representatives

                Dear Mr. Martini:

This letter responds to your October 5, 1995, request for information about the
dollar value and types of federal grants awarded to the state of New Jersey in fiscal
                year 1994.

According to Federal Expenditures by State for Fiscal Year 1994, a publication of
the U.S. Bureau of the Census, federal grants to the state and local governments in
New Jersey totaled about $6.2 billion. This Census publication does not separate
grants to the state government from those received by local governments and does
not describe the nature of the grants received.

However, the Consolidated Federal Funds Report-which is also published by the
Census Bureau, and includes grants to nongovernmental units-shows that New
Jersey received about $6.3 billion in federal grants from 480 different federal
programs during fiscal year 1993-the latest year for which the detailed data are
available. The enclosure to this letter lists the 40 programs that comprised about
90 percent of the total reported grant awards for fiscal year 1993.

If you have further questions, please contact me on (202) 512-9573.

                Sincerely yours,

                Paul L. Posner
                Director, Budget Issues

                Enclosure
