             September 11, 1995

             The Honorable Charles E. Grassley
             United States Senate

             Dear Senator Grassley:

This correspondence responds to your September 6, 1995,
request for supplemental information on our recent report on
             AmeriCorps*USA's resources and benefits.'

The specific information you requested is provided in this
correspondence and the two enclosures. The information
depicted is based on the status of the program at the time
we conducted our original audit work and pertains to the
             1994-95 program year.

In our report, we presented resources available on a per-
             participant, per-service-hour and per-direct-service-hour
basis. As agreed with both you and Senator Mikulski, while
we collected information on in-kind contributions from the
private sector, we did not include these contributions in
our per-participant and per-service-hour calculations. We
did, however, include in-kind contributions from the private
sector in our estimates of total resources available.
Private in-kind resources accounted for 14 percent (about
$18 million) of all matching contributions supporting
AmeriCorps*USA programs. You asked us for a specific
breakout of private in-kind resources on a per-participant,
             per-service-hour and per-direct-service-hour basis. These
             figures are $1,417, $0.83, and $1.04, respectively.

Enclosure 1 presents information you requested showing the
number of participants enrolled and expected to enroll
before the end of the program year in AmeriCorps*USA
programs. These figures are broken down by number of full-
and part-time participants. We also provide the number of
participants, broken down by full- and part-time, that
AmeriCorps*USA grantees budgeted for. The figures we cite
as enrolled or expected to enroll were derived from
