Federal Benefit Programs:

A Profile





This document profiles 150 federal benefit programs
that provide cash or noncash assistance to persons
demonstrating need or who qualify for benefits as a
resut of either (1) contributions made by them or on
their behalf or (2) military service. These programs
spent more than 400 billion in federal tax dollars in
    f year 1983, excluding administrative costs, or
about 49 percent of the United States Budget.
Estimates for these programs for fiscal year 1986 are
nearly $450 billion.
As a profile, the document identifies the 150 pro-
?rfams, and for91 selected programs, it (1) provides
nancfal and other relatd.data; (2) describes their
purpses, who is eligible for them, and the benefits
vailblbe; and (3) identifies the federal agencies that
jdminister them and the congressional committees
th t oversee them.
OA0 believes this document will be useful to the
Congress, the Executive Branch, state governments,
and the general public. It demonstrates the exten-
sivnos and magnitude of federal benefit programs
that affect the lives of most Americans.
