 priqarily at a means tar building data bases and querying hospital
 metdcal records. In 1572, the Aumeritcan National sLdards Insti-
 tomte beguil a process which led to the approval of a staidard for
 the  4nguage, MUPS is one of tan A'tferican Natlnal Strndard
 lengweges.
      In 1976p thp KURPS Users Group asked the National Bureau of
 Stajdar a to orm a task C~rCO for the purpose of makin  MUMrPS a
 Federal information Processing Standard. As you know, the arooks
 Act (Pr. 89-306) gave the Department of Commerce rasponaLbllit for
 pproving standards for the Federal Government. Thv RILIeau 9Lres
 its official seal of approval to languages that (1) have areas of
 application for which there is a Government-wide requLtreinent, J2)
 have portable code, (3) are maintainable, 14) have an :asured sup-
 ply *C tnterpreters/coipilers, and (5) require minimal training
