     The Honorable John F. Seiberling
     Chairman, Subcommittee on Public Lands
        and National Parks
Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs
      House of Representatives
                                                                   121356
      Dear Mr. Chairman:

Subject: Travel of Certain Interior Headquarters Personnel
                      (GAO/RCED-83-160)

This letter is in response to your April 19, 1983, request
for information on recent official travel by Interior headquarters
personnel in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Fish and
Wildlife and Parks and by division chiefs and higher officials in
the National Park Service. The information requested was for a
      6-week period.

The data provided to us by the two Interior organizations
include (1) names and titles of travelers, (2) points of travel,
      (3) periods of travel, and (4) total costs for recent 6-week
periods. (See encls. I and II.)

Our review of the data was done in accordance with generally
accepted government auditing standards. We reviewed the travel
authorizations approved for the two organizations for fiscal year
1983 to date, certain travel vouchers submitted and/or individual
travel record cards, and other related accounting and budgeting
data. We found a few minor discrepancies in the data provided and
brought them to the attention of Interior officials who corrected
the data. Based on our review of the travel records and test
checks made, we believe that the provided data, as revised,
presents an accurate record of the official travel taken during
      the time period indicated.

                                                               (148120)
