Projects Funded In The

Montgomery, Alabama, Metropolitan Area

By The Emergency Jobs

Appropriations Act Of 1983

To meet economic problems facing the nation, the
Congress enacted the Emergency Jobs Appropriations
Act of 1983, which made over $9 billion available for fiscal
year 1983 and beyond. Title I of the act made funds
available to provide, among other things, essential and
productive jobs. GAO analyzed available data on projects
that were awarded these funds in six geographical areas
throughout the United States. This report discusses the
Montgomery, Alabama, metropolitan area.

GAO found that about $1.8 million, or nearly 33 percent of
over $5.5 million awarded to projects identified in the
Montgomery metropolitan area, had been spent by March
31, 1984--about 1 year after passage of the act. Of an
estimated 549 people who were employed, at least 117
had been previously unemployed. In addition to the
short-term employment opportunities resulting from
these funds, other benefits--such as road and street
improvements, home weatherization, and newly con-
structed facilities--had been and are expected to be
provided to the metropolitan area.
