Greater Emphasis On Testing

Needed To Make Computer

Software More Reliable And

Less Costly

Federal agencies spend billions of dollars
annually on computer software programs.
Hqwever, unless these programs receive
adequate testing, federal managers cannot
be reasonably sure that they provide accu-
rate, reliable information and that computer
resources are used efficiently and econom-
icolly.

GAO found that agencies do not manage the
software testing process and, as a result,
problem software, once in operation, is
unreliable and costly.

Tle General Services Administration has
already taken some steps to improve the
q ality of software, but more remains to be
done. Heads of federal agencies should
require automatic data processing manag-
e s to place greater emphasis on software
testing.
