As the Congress considers its response to the presence of illegal aliens in this country, accurate estimates of the size and growth of this population would be use- ful for deciding on policy options and for evaluat- ing policy effectiveness. However, presently available estimates are imprecise and insuffi- ciently reliable. GAO reviewed previous estimates of the size of the illegal alien population as well as methods that have been used to estimate other popula- tions that are difficult to count. GAO found that acouiring precise estimates of the illegal alien :opulation with these methods requires better ,nformation on immigration than is presently available. GAO presents for congressional consideration three alternative ways of acquiring information -elevant to policymaking on illegal aliens. In 3ssessing the merit of these alternatives, the Congress should weigh the extent of its concern 'or reliable narrow-ranged estimates against ,he significant expenditure of resources that vould be required.
