Report To The Congress

OF THE UNITED STATES

Discontinuing Social Security's Currently

Insured Benefit Provision Would Save

Millions And Eliminate Inequities

One of Social Security's benefit eligibility
ibsurance provisions, the currently insured
; rovision, no longer has relevance. Dis-
continuance of the provision could save
Social Security's trust funds about $180
illion through 1990 and will not affect
urvivors now receiving benefits. Further,
iscontinuance will end some inequities to
4urvivors of fully insured workers and to
iome survivors of workers who do not qual-
fy for benefits.
'AO recommends that the Congress amend
he Social Security Act to eliminate the cur-
ently insured provision.
