FAA Misses Opportunities To Discontinue

Or Reduce Operating Hours Of Some

Airport Traffic Control Towers

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
operates a national air traffic control system
which provides for the safe and expeditious
movement of air traffic. One segment of this
system--444 airport traffic control towers
which control air traffic at and near airports--
costs over $400 million a year to operate.

Millions of dollars in savings are possible if
FAA adopts uniform criteria to identify eco-
nomically unjustified control towers and
closes such towers.

FAA is not adequately surveying or evaluating
air traffic levels at 24-hour control towers to
identify opportunities to reduce operating
hours. Reducing operating hours can save
money by decreasing staff.
